New FL Rule For Student Drivers Under 18 Years Old

IMPORTANT!

Big changes are on the horizon for the TLSAE (Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education) course, and we want to keep you in the loop about what this means for our student drivers and the steps we’re taking to make the transition smooth. Here's everything you need to know:

What’s Happening?

New legislation passed in Florida recently (SB994) will change this course and it will now be redefined as a Driver Education Traffic Safety (DETS) course, which will meet new Department of Education standards.

Key Changes:

  • The course length will increase from 4 hours to 6 hours.

  • As of July 1, 2025, the current TLSAE course will no longer be available for students under 18.

  • Students 18 and older can still take the current TLSAE course (both online and in-classroom).

What’s Sunny Road Doing About It?

We’re working hard to ensure a seamless transition for all our students. Here’s how we’re preparing:

  • Course Updates: We’re actively updating both our classroom and online course materials to align with the new DETS standards.

  • Collaboration with FLHSMV: Our team is closely working with the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) to make sure our new course meets all requirements. We’re committed to maintaining the same level of service you’ve come to expect.

  • Timeline: We’re on track to submit the updated courses to FLHSMV well before the July 1, 2025 deadline. We’ll also have the entire system ready for the transition, so there’s no disruption.

What Does This Mean for You?

If you’re under 18, you’ll be taking the new DETS course, which will still be available in the same formats (online and in-person). For those 18 and older, the current TLSAE course remains unchanged.

Final Thoughts

Sunny Road Driving School is confident that we’re in a strong position to adapt to these changes. We’ve made significant progress and are fully prepared to ensure that the new course meets all standards and deadlines.

As always, we’re here to provide the support you need, and we’ll keep you updated as we approach the July 1st, 2025 deadline.

Stay tuned for more updates, and thanks for being part of the Sunny Road Driving School community!
